In my previous post I mentioned that I want to talk with you about this album and the band in general. Are you interested in this? Grab you earphones and stay tuned,we are getting started!
Who are the Glass Animals?
Just to make this clear – Glass Animals are an English indie rock band from Oxford. The band has released their debut album Zaba in June 2014 as the first release on producer Paul Epworth’s label Wolf Tone. Zaba was the band’s debut album, which brought the band to 7 million listeners on Spotify in 2015. Their songs “Gooey”, “Black Mambo” and “Toes” from Zaba are the most popular on Apple Music. The Deluxe version of Zaba was released in August 2015. The band performed the single “Gooey” on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2014 and again on The Late Show with David Letterman on 24 February 2015. Their sophomore album How to Be a Human Being was released on 26 August, 2016. That is the album we are gonna talk about today.
It is more like experimental rock music which tries to copy 80s pop music with vibes of classic indie rock music. It′s strange and experimental but that is what makes this album interesting. Lets just talk about every single song on the album, turn the music on,this is gonna be fun.
This one actually started off as a slow, dark and moody track. Quite insular. But eventually we realized there was a cheekiness to the lyrics that we hadn’t really explored,we injected a sense of optimism into the music. The character that this track is about is a sci-fi obsessed boy who spends most of his time alone inventing strange things and writing stories about guns or looking for aliens on Google Maps. This whole thing is inspired by old sci-fi films/series.
The idea for this one came from a story someone told the band lead singer ot he groupie once. They were telling him about their child, something really bad had happened to them. She was crying—but at the same time the memories that they had from that previous life made her so happy—so she was also smiling. That combination of emotions kind of made him feel like my heart was being ripped apart but also optimistic in a weird way. She had found a way to see happiness in this awful thing that had happened to her. It has those 80s vibes but that combination of emotions is just amazing but weird and thats amazing.
Season 2 Episode 3
“Everyone knows someone like the character from this song. If you don’t, then it’s you. But there are lots of references to different psychedelic cartoons in this one—sonically and lyrically—including Adventure Time. That show is crazy.” said Bayley, the lead singer. Hard to say what this song is about, you need to create your own view. I was playing this to my friend and she asked me if that was a song by The 1975. Then I showed this to another friend and he told me that part “She’s broken but she’s fun, My girl eats mayonnaise” reminds him of me,haha. This song is fun, play it to your friends.
Fourth track Pork Soda, for example, came from a tattoo. “It was a giant pig, a stick figure pig, a really cool pig,” Bayley says. “It said pork soda in big scrawling letters, I thought it was the best tattoo I’ve ever seen. It was this woman, she gave us a load of gifts, it was amazing, 30 little glass animals. I saw her tattoo, and I was like, ‘that’s sick – why?’ And she was like, ‘I just like pork soda,’ and I thought that was really cool, it played into the mentality of the person in that song. I just really liked the phrase.” And what exactly is pork soda? “It’s a drink. It’s a drink and it’s a meal, they put pork and cook it in coca cola in a stew. She says it’s the best meal and a drink.” – that is what Bayley said about this song. The opening of the song is meant to sound like you’re outside on the street, and you can hear a group of people chanting this song. The drum sounds are made from old bins and trash pieces of metal I found around the studio. Kind of like those street drummers use. All that is meant to set the scene for the story. Bayley also said – “I heard a homeless man talking to someone once and say ‘pineapples are in my head.’ In retrospect, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t actually those words, but I thought it was at the time, and it kind of stuck with me.”
This song is mainly about mental health, and I remembered this song by The Carpenters called “Mr. Guder.” It fit the atmosphere musically, while the song “Mr. Guder” itself was about an odd character of sorts, and then on top of that, Karen Carpenter’s story added another dimension to the lyrics. if you don’t know the story, you should look it up. It’s important and very sad, and it started a general social dialogue about mental illness which is to this day still a subject matter that we avoid far too much. – confessed Dave Bayley about this song. Music in this is so soft then comes the guitar and music is still soft. But lets say it would be really weird if someone did a song about mental health with hard music drops or crazy guitar riffs, wouldn´t it?
Due to “Cane Shuga” being featured in the album teaser, the first preview of How to Be a Human Being that many fans heard was from this song. This song is about the character in Speedos. Cane Shuga is a slang term for cocaine; the character declares during the song that he wishes to stop taking it. He apparently “does cocaine in the bathroom secretly, all day, every day,” and is “a drug dealer for the elite.”Judging by the band’s “mood board” used to create the character, it appears that the song’s working title was originally “Nostrand.” This graphic also reveals that the two verses of the song were swapped around, and each represents a different character.
My favorite word in the album is in this: “McFuck.” It’s something that someone’s gotten at McDonald’s. Here it is used in a sentence: “What the McFuck are you eating?” said Dave with a smile on his face in one of the interviews. This song is a spoken word interlude impinging on a healthy diet . Its the weirdest thing I have ever heard. But I wont spoil that to you, anyway, how could I spoil something about health diet which has 36 seconds?
The Other Side Of Paradise
Dave mentioned this is his musically and lyrically favorite song from this album and so is mine. It is so simple but awesome. The character of this song is the basketball player as can be reduced from the posts tagged “The Other Side of Paradise” on Glass Animals tumblr page. Not to mention the song refers to a hoop phenomenon, or a famous basketball player.
Take A Slice
This track is about someone with a lot of lust. It’s as sleazy as I’ll ever get in lyrics. But everyone has that inside them somewhere, even if it’s only a tiny bit. And it comes out from time to time. For some people, it’s out all the time. The character of this song is the Asian girl in the bottom right corner (from deduction (because this character doesn’t fit anywhere else).
“This song is about the lady in the white dress who’s probably Mrs Moore. This song is meant to open with a kind of musical/lyrical image of a place. A little guitar hook and a floating vocal line that all seems quite peaceful, but things get more and more twisted as the song goes on. The guitar starts doing weirder things, the music builds tension, and then the whole thing flips on it’s head at the end. And you find that maybe that place isn’t what you first expected it was.” I really like the guitar intro of this song,it is the one of those calmy songs,I definitely like it.
Bayley said about the last song on the album just this: “As soon as I started writing it, I knew it would be the album closer. This is my favorite song on the record. And the saddest song I will ever write.” According to a Facebook post, “Agnes” is Dave Bayley’s favorite song on How to Be a Human Being.
Each song on the album is represented by one of the characters on the cover; from the band’s official “mood board” we learn that Agnes is “a boy, male, 20s, Indian” and “probably lives in a loft apartment”. He is the man holding several cameras, pictured on the centre of the album cover.
Thats it. Do you know something about the album I did not mention in this post? What do you think about this album? Lets me in the comment section!
And see you
hopefully soon. 🙂
